Blizzard President fuels rumors of a Cow Level in Diablo 4

Blizzard Entertainment continues to drive fans crazy well over a week into Diablo 4's launch, this time concerning a long-running series gag.

Diablo 4 isn't just the fastest-selling game in Blizzard Entertainment's history; it's already one of its most-played titles too. Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 4 has been played for an equivalent of more than ten thousand years already. In other words, adventurers have uncovered a lot in Diablo 4. Or, at least, that's what Blizzard would like you to believe. After all, Diablo GM insists that a cow level doesn't exist in Diablo 4. But, this hasn't stopped players from calling his bluff.

Just like Inarius, who refused to accept that the Heavens no longer wanted him, a swath of Diablo 4 fans insist that a Secret Cow Level is in the game.

It probably doesn't help kill rumors when Blizzard's CEO, Mike Ybarra, recently stoked the fires of speculation simply by NOT ignoring them.

In a recent tweet by IGN about a potential "secret cow level", Ybarra replied with an animated GIF with a subtle and funny reaction.

And, just like that, Diablo 4 players are off to the races, looking for every bit of clue in the game to see whether or not a Cow Level really exists in the game or not.

For what it's worth, Diablo games have a reputation for callbacks and Easter eggs, dating all the way back to, ironically, the original Cow Level. Diablo 4 isn't an exception. The game's first act, for example, uses the original Diablo music. The Hidden Camp from Diablo 3, now desecrated and abandoned, appears in Diablo 4 as well. Even The Butcher - the guy that spawns at any dungeon at any time - is actually the first boss Diablo players encountered and die to in the original Diablo game. Finally, Diablo 2's most powerful hat, the Harlequin Crest Drop, makes its way into the game, and it's just as powerful as ever.

So, with so many things from the older games finding their way into Diablo 4, you can't blame fans for believing that the Secret Cow Level exists in the game, or at least some form of it.

What are the chances that Blizzard is hiding this "secret" level to the select few who have finished the game?

Besides, how could you not hold on to that belief when a passage like the one below is found in Diablo 4:

The Oxen Gods stand as guardians to this sacred fountain. It is said that one who presents a worthy offering cleansed in these waters may gain their blessing.

We know a Cow Level tease when we see one, so we know Blizzard is aware players will come looking for it.

So, while players might not have found a Secret Cow level in Diablo 4 yet, it's technically possible that it's there. Or, if it isn't, Blizzard is probably just waiting for the right time to add it.

Something tells us that the story of Inarius and Lilith aren't done yet.

Regardless of whatever the truth is, Diablo 4 is proving to be quite a massive game that should grow larger in the future. It already has a single-player campaign that's worth its weight in gold and Blizzard promises to release seasonal story bits to make it more interesting. With at least two massive expansions already in development and because Diablo 4 is technically a live-service game - and not a lazy one at that - Blizzard has plenty of chances to add in more content, including those brutishly strong bovines from hell led by none other than the Cow King.

The first season of Diablo 4 comes out by next month, so be sure to keep an eye out for more Campfire Chats to find out more about what else is coming or has been discovered in Diablo 4.
