Blizzard lays out plan against death by disconnect in Diablo 4 Hardcore Mode

As an always-online, live-service game, one of the inherent risks of playing Diablo 4 is that disconnects are common if expected.

The Diablo 4 Hardcore Mode isn't for the faint of heart. At its core, as its name suggests, the mode is an arduous challenge for gamers seeking a thrilling experience where the stakes are higher than ever. In this mode, if your character dies, it's no longer available to play again as the game permanently locks you out of it - progress, gear, and all.

Believe it or not, only a few hundred players have reached Level 100 in Hardcore Mode in Diablo 4 so far.

This harsh yet enticing feature is a mainstay in the Diablo franchise that only the bravest of adventurers dare risk playing. But, since the move to an always-online requirement (or, at least, some form of it), the most terrifying ordeal faced by the Hardcore Mode players isn't the formidable foes or challenging quests - it's the looming risk of losing everything to a server issue and/or an internet outage.

The dreaded "disconnect death" is a nightmarish situation that can eradicate hours of meticulous play in an instant, such as what happened when the first Hardcore player to reach level 100 fell victim to it, or when another streamer died to a literal loading screen. These incidents ignited a wave of concerns, forcing Blizzard Entertainment, the masterminds behind Diablo 4, to address these frustrations and assure the Hardcore community that a fix was in the works.

It's a shame that the update likely won't arrive until after the race to Level 100 in Hardcore Mode in Diablo 4 ends.

In a recent Diablo 4 Campfire Chat, Joe Shely, the game director, acknowledged these concerns and confirmed that Blizzard is working on an innovative solution to curb disconnect deaths. Their proposed fix involves tweaking the item exclusive to Hardcore mode - the Scroll of Escape. When activated, this scroll allows players to escape precarious situations or quickly exit the game if required. In the event of a disconnect, a future update will force players to use this scroll, instantly teleporting them back to town and significantly reducing the chance of disconnect deaths.

Despite this promising development, Shely cautions that this fix is not foolproof, and instances of disconnects due to lag or server issues could still occur. However, it is a monumental step in shielding Hardcore players from undue losses and ensuring their gaming experience remains enjoyable.

As promising as this news is, Hardcore players will need to exercise patience. Blizzard has stated the fix won't immediately apply to Diablo 4 and is projected to be delivered around Season 2. The reasons for this considerable delay are unclear but could be attributed to the fact that updates for Season 1 have already been certified and cannot be altered. Nevertheless, the fix is on its way, giving Hardcore players a glimmer of hope for a safer and more stable gaming experience.

Not only that, but Blizzard still has to address the issue being raised by the award-winning celebrity and long-time Diablo fan, Whoopi Goldberg.

You have to admire Blizzard's commitment about keeping fans in the loop about upcoming Diablo 4 updates.

All jokes aside, Blizzard's promise for bigger things coming to Diablo 4, including at least two expansions, should give fans plenty to look forward to as the game successfully navigates its best-selling launch week.
