Did Blizzard sneak a secret post-credit scene in Diablo 4?

It looks like Blizzard Entertainment really wants Diablo 4 players to "stay a while and listen" or, rather, finish watching the credits roll.

Gone are the days when video game developers used to sneak in a secret ending or character or two in their games. Most usually hide additional content behind paywalls and premium content these days. But, as much as we all love to criticize or bash Blizzard Entertainment for its greedy practices and for forcing players to create a new character each time a Diablo 4 season comes out, it appears that it hasn't forgotten its roots just yet. In fact, fans have discovered an interesting Easter Egg in Diablo 4. Or, more importantly, fans are actively discovering new stuff in Diablo 4.

Don't expect a major reveal at the end of Diablo 4 but there's a now-not-so-secret tease for those who sit through the end.

For those of you who have managed to finish the campaign, you may think you have seen the end of it. You may have even savored your triumph over Lilith albeit it's clear Neyrelle is in danger of falling victim to the machinations of Mephisto, not unlike Prince Aidan of Khanduras from the original Diablo game was eventually corrupted by Diablo. But, enough about that for now. Apparently, there's a piece of the narrative puzzle that many are missing.

A post-credits scene, subtly woven into the game's ending, has left players in a state of bewilderment and excitement. But, what truly adds to the intrigue is that not everyone who has finished the game is witnessing this cryptic surprise. Better yet, there appear to be multiple types of post-credits scenes in Diablo 4 and it's currently unknown which triggers which.

The conundrum of the post-credits scene came to light when Jamir Blanco, a Cinematic Character and Creature Artist at Blizzard Entertainment, took to Twitter to confirm its existence. According to Blanco, Diablo 4 contains a post-credits scene. This revelation has sparked a whirlwind of speculation and theory-crafting among the players, as they grapple to decipher what triggers this elusive scene and what it could mean.

As to what the scene itself entails, it isn't an elaborate spectacle but rather a brief, ambiguous tease. A demon appears for a few seconds against a backdrop of hellish red, its face pulsating ominously before vanishing. There's no dialogue at all or any context, only the visage of a demon with no clear identity.

Some say it's reminiscent of Diablo, which would make sense since his name is still on the title but others believe that it's Mephisto. After all, the Lord of Hatred offered his help to players throughout the single-player campaign of Diablo 4.

Of the four different post-credits scenes for Diablo 4, three of them tease Mephisto outright, which begs the question, who is this supposed to be?

In any case, the game offers no explicit confirmation, leading players to theorize that this could be part of what Blizzard is teasing when it promised that it had big plans for Diablo 4 ahead of the release of the first season in mid-to-late July.

However, amidst the wave of speculation, confusion has arisen over the criteria for triggering the post-credits scene. Some players have suggested it might be tied to the game's difficulty, while others have reported seeing it only after multiple playthroughs. Some players, despite finishing the game and sitting through the credits, have not witnessed the scene at all. Blanco, too, appears uncertain about the conditions that lead to its triggering, promising to investigate this within Blizzard.

This peculiar post-credits tease is reminiscent of the long-standing tradition of the gaming community's love for secrets and Easter eggs. Blizzard, in particular, is still believed to have snuck in a Secret Cow Level in Diablo 4, despite saying numerous times that it doesn't exist in the game - yet.

The ending to Diablo 4 all but confirms that Mephiso, or perhaps his other son, Lucion, has a much larger role to play in all of this.

While the definitive identity of the fiery demon remains an enigma, the debate rages on in the gaming community, with theories ranging from the return of Diablo to the emergence of new villains. One thing is certain: the anticipation for the first post-launch season has been stoked to a fever pitch. In the coming weeks, as Blizzard begins teasing their upcoming content, we may start to see some sense emerge from this infernal mystery. Until then, all we can do is speculate, theorize and, just like Blizzard boss, Mike Ybarra, keep on playing.
