Most games take at least a year if not longer to sell 15 million units. Hogwarts Legacy, despite its controversies, took less than two months to achieve this feat.
As transcribed by VGC, David Zaslav took the lead in the latest Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call where he revealed that Hogwarts Legacy has now joined four other Warner Bros. Discovery video game franchises in the billion-dollar club.
According to Zaslav, Hogwarts Legacy is now in elite company alongside Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, LEGO, and DC games.
Hogwarts Legacy came out on the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and the PC on February 7 and sold 12 million copies in two weeks of hitting the store shelves. This means that the game has moved more than three million units since then.
While few would nominate Hogwarts Legacy for this year's Game of the Year award, it's clear that it's become one lucrative investment for Warner Bros. Discovery. Perhaps due to its success, the company has become emboldened to work with the controversial Wizarding World franchise author, J.K. Rowling, on a live-action TV reboot of the Harry Potter books.
Hogwarts Legacy only recently hit the PS4 and Xbox One, so we're expecting its last-gen launch to move the sales needle by a few million.
It's unclear if the Nintendo Switch port will sell well, especially following the cancelation of Marvel's Midnight Suns on the popular Nintendo platform. We'll have to find out on July 25.
