Such is the case with the recent character mod in the highly-anticipated game Street Fighter 6 by Capcom, where the new villainous character, JP, was replaced by an iconic Pokemon, Mewtwo.

Mewtwo as the big boss in Street Fighter 6 doesn't sound like the worst idea.

This surprising amalgamation of two distinct gaming universes is credited to the creativity and diligence of the Twitter user Mika, otherwise known as Tail__Lover.

Because of her machinations, the legendary Psychic-type Pokemon is now playable in Street Fighter 6 with a promise that more are coming.

Street Fighter 6, which came out last June 2, debuted new characters like Luke, Jamie, Kimberly, Marisa, Manon, Lily, and JP, alongside familiar faces like Ryu and Chun-Li. For a more personalized gaming experience, the title also boasted a detailed character creation system, which turned out to be a breeding ground for some truly unique results.

The role of the new villain, JP, was created to fill the void left by the long-standing antagonist, M. Bison, and Capcom didn’t hold back on making him a formidable character.

JP is a strategic manipulator who uses his deadly Psycho Power to create shadowy constructs and engage in psychological warfare with his opponents. His shadowy attacks and effects complement Mewtwo despite being a Psychic-type, fitting more with his portrayal in the aforementioned Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Now that Bison has renounced its evil ways, JP is the next villain in Street Fighter.

Seeing the parallels between Mewtwo and JP, Mika decided to embark on a mission: to replace every character in the Street Fighter 6 roster with a character possessing a large tail. Thus, the birth of the Mewtwo mod came to be. Using the model from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mika replaced JP's cane with a spoon – a possible reference to the Pokemon Adventures manga where Mewtwo uses a spoon as a shield. However, the mod isn’t without its issues; problems with hand rigging, clipping, and absent facial animations are among the known challenges.

Mika’s innovative mod has stirred a buzz within the Street Fighter and Pokemon communities. However, this excitement is not without its fair share of controversies. Following the mod’s release, Mika criticized users for not crediting them for their creation. Eventually, credit was given where it was due, with the mod's original sharer linking Mika's work on their post.

The intersection of the Street Fighter universe with the Pokemon world has indeed piqued the interest of gamers. It offers an unconventional yet exciting twist that blends nostalgia with novelty. As fans continue to explore the new territory that is Street Fighter 6, they are also challenged by characters like JP, who, with his vast range and zoner abilities, is not easy to take down. But, in the hands of the right player, he, or perhaps Mewtwo in this case, can be a force to be reckoned with.

We're still surprised that Pokken Tournament still hasn't gotten a sequel after all this time.

Of course, don't expect this crossover to happen in an official capacity anytime soon - Nintendo's lawyers are probably on the wings, waiting for the go signal as we speak.

What is the Magic: The Gathering Ambassador Program and who is it for? https://www.xfire.com/magic-the-gathering-ambassador-program-wotc-content-creators/ https://www.xfire.com/magic-the-gathering-ambassador-program-wotc-content-creators/#comments Sun, 18 Jun 2023 16:24:22 +0000 https://www.xfire.com/?p=294232 Wizards of the Coast is looking to team-up with content creators via their newly launched Magic: The Gathering Ambassador Program.

2023 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years for Magic: The Gathering. Despite controversies in the past year, Magic: The Gathering remains a billion-dollar moneymaker for WotC and parent company Hasbro. In fact, the massively popular fantasy trading card game has increased its profitability, up by 16% compared to 2022, according to Hasbro’s first quarter financial report.

With the upcoming crossover set with the epic Tolkien mythos in Magic: The Gathering – Tales of Middle-earth already looking to be another big win for the company, WotC is looking at the potential marketing opportunities content creators can offer.

The launch of the Magic: The Gathering Ambassador Program was announced through the official website and shared via social media.

Wizards of the Coast describes the Magic: The Gathering Ambassador Program as follows:

The MTG Ambassador Program provides content creators with additional tools to create their Magic: The Gathering content. Ambassadors receive set information and a variety of cards from each set before debut day in order to prepare thoughtful, informative content for their audience. They’re beacons of kindness, creativity, and inclusivity.

Content creators who are lucky enough to be included in the MTG Ambassador Program will get exclusive swag. This includes product samples from every Magic: The Gathering set as they are released, Magic: The Gathering Arena benefits, MagicCon badges, and other cool stuff. They will also have direct access to provide feedback and work with WotC in promotional initiatives for the Magic: The Gathering brand.

magic-the-gathering-ambassador-program-wotc-content-creators-ARCHITECT
Content creators selected to be part of the 2023 Magic: The Gathering Ambassador Program will receive swag and benefits for both the tabletop version and the digital Magic: The Gathering Arena game.

But before you go knocking at WoTC’s door and raising your hand saying you volunteer like Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games, note that the initial roster of MTG Ambassadors has apparently already been selected. According to the announcement:

The 2023 Ambassadors were chosen because of their varied content creation styles, backgrounds, and platforms. We took extra care in our evaluation processes to address potential biases that may exclude marginalized or underrepresented groups and invited creators for whom Magic is their singular passion, or one of many. The program includes creators of all sizes and levels of notoriety. Selected creators were already meeting the frequency of Magic: The Gathering content that we requested.

The MTG Ambassador Program is currently limited to content creators located in the North American region. Moreover, the program is available by invite-only. Thus, if you are not an existing Magic: The Gathering content creator with an already established following and clout, it’s unlikely that you will be one of the proverbial "chosen few" who are part of the 2023 selection process.

magic-the-gathering-ambassador-program-wotc-content-creators-CAPASHEN
The roster for the 2023 MTG Ambassador Program has apparently already been selected and limited to content creators in North America. However, there are future plans to expand prior to the selection of the 2024 roster.

With that said, Wizards of the Coast has stated it will eventually set up an application process and form in the future when the next roster of 2024 Magic: The Gathering Ambassadors will be selected. Moreover, the scope will be expanded to regions other than North America as the program grows.

One cannot help but wonder though if this is a reaction to the issues involving Wizards of the Coast in recent months. The Pinkerton incident involving a YouTube MTG fan who accidentally received boxes of March of the Machine: The Aftermath certainly comes to mind. Magic: The Gathering fans even called out for a boycott due to the sour taste left by that particular situation.

For MTG fans who are looking for more information and details about the Magic: The Gathering Ambassador Program, Wizards of the Coast encourages contacting them by email at creators@wizards.com.

The Pokemon Company triggers Twitter users with its overpriced Team Rocket merchandise https://www.xfire.com/the-pokemon-company-team-rocket-merchandise/ https://www.xfire.com/the-pokemon-company-team-rocket-merchandise/#comments Thu, 15 Jun 2023 17:56:17 +0000 https://www.xfire.com/?p=293411 It’s a day that ends in y, so The Pokemon Company has unveiled a new line of products bound to make people empty their pockets.

Team Rocket, the iconic antagonist group from the Pokemon franchise, is getting its own clothing line, and the internet is losing its mind over the exorbitant price tags. The Team Rocket HQ Apparel Capsule Collection, recently announced on the company's social media platforms, features a range of t-shirts, shorts, hoodies, hats, pants, socks, and jackets.

The collection's sole distinguishing factor from generic merchandise is the inclusion of the crime syndicate's infamous "R" logo. However, that hasn't stopped the Japanese company from embracing the trio's spirit for profit, as many social media users have pointed out.

Despite the outcry, a number of diehard Pokemon fans were already eagerly filling their online shopping carts with every available item.

No matter what you may think of The Pokemon Company, one thing is clear: it has mastered the art of maximizing profits through merchandising. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're probably aware of the exorbitant amounts of money that Pokemon enthusiasts are willing to shell out for rare Pokemon cards.

In fact, just this week, one particular individual spent a whopping $25,000 on a rare second-grader's hand-drawn Pokemon card.

All the Team Rocket merchandise is available on the Pokemon Center website.

So, the next time you feel like you're spending too much money on clothing, keep in mind that there are people out there who willingly spent 80 bucks on a t-shirt with nothing but a big "R" printed on it. Perspective is everything!

Second-grader's hand-drawn Pokemon card sets new record with $25,000 sale https://www.xfire.com/second-graders-pokemon-card-25000-sale/ https://www.xfire.com/second-graders-pokemon-card-25000-sale/#comments Wed, 14 Jun 2023 08:15:43 +0000 https://www.xfire.com/?p=292947 It feels like almost every other day we come across news of a rare Pokemon card fetching a stupendous sum of money. The frequency of these occurrences has made it really hard to move the needle anymore, so the weight of this latest deal making headlines cannot be overstated.

Second-grader's hand-drawn Pokemon card ,000

On June 11, a groundbreaking sale took place at the auction house PWCC, where the Spikey-Eared Pichu Pokemon card, illustrated by a second-grader and showcasing Pikachu's pre-evolution Pichu, was sold for an astounding $25,800. This card, in flawless Gem Mint 10 condition, has now claimed the title of the most valuable Pichu-themed Pokemon card ever sold.

The Spikey-Eared Pichu card holds a PSA 10 grade.

To give context as to why someone would cash in so much money for what the uninitiated would term a piece of cardboard, here's a brief history of the card. In 2009, Shogakukan, the parent company that owns Viz Media, organized a contest across Japan as part of a promotional campaign for the release of the Pokemon movie, Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

The contest extended its invitation to children from kindergarten to 12th grade to showcase their artistic skills by drawing and submitting artwork featuring either Spikey-Eared Pichu or Arceus. Ultimately, a winner was chosen from each age group, and their designs were transformed into actual Pokemon cards.

In the case of the Spikey-Eared Pichu, the winning artist emerged from the second-grade group. While the exact number of cards created for each contest winner remains undisclosed, PWCC approximates that there are somewhere between 13 and 100 copies in existence, which places them on the list of the most rare Pokemon cards ever designed.

Logan Paul is a known Pokemon enthusiast and holds some of the rarest limited-edition cards.

To date, a total of 60 cards from the contest have been authenticated and graded by PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), among which are three Spikey-Eared Pichu cards. For those who may be unfamiliar with Pokemon cards, it is worth noting that there are merely 41 known copies of the highly sought-after Pikachu Illustrator cards in existence worldwide.

Surprisingly, only one of these cards has been certified as a flawless Gem Mint 10, and it fetched an outrageous $5.275 million when it was sold to YouTuber Logan Paul in 2021. This latest $25 Pichu card sale isn't quite in the same league, but is still a heavy hitter.

million mark. (Images: Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro and Middle-earth Enterprises)

Anticipation is extremely high for the Universes Beyond crossover set that brings together the collectible card game and J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy world. Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro are banking on Tales of Middle-earth to continue the success of Magic: The Gathering with crossing over with popular franchises. Previous Universes Beyond sets featured The Transformers, Warhammer 40K, Stranger Things, The Walking Dead, and WoTC’s own Forgotten Realms setting for Dungeons & Dragons.

The search for the one-of-its-kind The One Ring foil card has become a literal bidding war that would make the Dark Lord Sauron blush. Things kicked off when NFL veteran Cassius Marsh Sr., who also owns Cash Cards Unlimited, posted a bid of $500,000 to get The One Ring.

But not long after, Dave & Adam's Card World raised the stakes by bidding a cool million bucks for the much sought after Universes Beyond MTG card.

While it’s not unheard of for a Magic: The Gathering card to fetch six figure bids in the aftermarket, these cards have the benefit of age and scarcity. Many of the highest valued Magic: The Gathering cards were part of the Alpha edition, the very first set released of the game back in 1993. Cards like the Black Lotus, Shivan Dragon, Lord of the Pit, Time Walk, the Moxes, and Ancestral Recall are just some of the examples of these high value, collectable pieces from that limited edition set.

1-million-dollar-bounty-magic-the-gathering-mtg-lotr-one-ring-card-SMEAGOL
With the bid for The One Ring 1/1 ultra-rare card in the Tales of Middle-earth set breaking the $1 million mark, whoever wins the bidding war will certainly call it their "precious". Just like Gollum did!

However, The One Ring from Tales of Middle-earth has a couple of key factors that contribute to its desirability in the eyes of collectors. First is the deliberately induced rarity. With The One Ring designed specifically to be the only one of its kind that will ever be officially printed, that gives it built-in scarcity.

The second equally important factor is the connection to the Tolkien mythos. The most famous fantasy setting in the world has influenced countless other properties, including Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering itself. Given how long it took for the crossover with The Lord of the Rings and MTG to come to fruition, who knows when something similar will happen again, if ever.

1-million-dollar-bounty-magic-the-gathering-mtg-lotr-one-ring-card-MOUNT-DOOM
Who would have thought a cardboard version of J.R.R. Tolkien's "One Ring to rule them all" would literally live up to its infamy by having a seven-figure bounty on it?

But is this the highest the bounty for this extremely collectible MTG card can go? While the bounty of $1 million placed by Dave & Adam’s Card World is impressive, there are individuals with deep pockets out there who can match or surpass that. One example is music artist and hardcore Magic: The Gathering fan Post Malone, who paid $800,000 for his mint condition Black Lotus card signed by artist Christopher Rush. Post Malone could certainly match that $1 million bounty and then some.

Regardless of whoever ultimately winds up with The One Ring ultra-rare MTG card, the hype already has an effect on the demand for the Tales of Middle-earth set. Preorders for the Collector Boosters are already commanding hundreds of dollars in the back market prior to the set’s official street release. Given that the Collector Boosters are the only packs that will have a chance at The One Ring, prices for these boxes will likely continue to skyrocket.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth for Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond will be released in physical stores and on Magic: The Gathering Arena on June 23, 2023. Pre-orders are still available through the official Wizards of the Coast store and via Amazon.

With less than a month away for the release of the much-anticipated crossover set, Wizards of the Coast (the subsidiary of Hasbro that handles the Magic: The Gathering IP) provided new sneak peeks at the cards and artwork from Tales of Middle-earth. The cards are under the Universes Beyond crossover subset of MTG. These will be available through a physical release and via the popular digital version of the trading card game, Magic: The Gathering Arena.

But not every fan is completely satisfied with the revelations, particularly with the pricing of the set and the unnecessary changes to the depiction of the characters from the traditional Tolkien stories.

Wizards of the Coast shot a promotional video with Elijah Wood as part of the marketing for the Universes Beyond MTG set Tales of Middle-earth.

In the clip, Wood gets to see and hold a pre-release batch of the cards from the set. The actor names out characters represented by the Magic: The Gathering cards, including Gimli, Aragorn, Arwen, Shelob, Rose Cotton, Galadriel, Pippen, Merry, and, of course, Sam and Frodo. Wood also added:

Seeing all these characters, they really mean something to me— Anytime you get to see these characters realized in a new and fresh way is always really exciting.

However, some groups of LoTR fans and Magic: The Gathering fans are not entirely happy with the Tales of Middle-Earth set. There are players and collectors who are unhappy with there being a single, ultra-rare One Ring card. While there will be multiple versions of The One Ring of varying rarities, there will be a "true" One Ring in the set (i.e. only one of this version will be printed), thus already driving the after-market prices for it, but also the entire set.

magic-the-gathering-mtg-lord-of-the-rings-lotr-elijah-wood-aragorn-interpretation-ONE-RING
Some fans and collectors are disappointed with the high prices and induced scarcity of cards in Tales of Middle-earth, particularly the "true" One Ring.

The Reddit r/magicTCG thread users are saying the set itself has an inflated overall price compared to previous Universes Beyond sets. But the aftermarket even before the set is released is projecting ridiculous prices, mainly due to the extremely rare One Ring.

Aside from the very high prices Tales of Middle-earth, a certain demographic of fans are reacting negatively to the artwork. The reactions in particular are targeted at changing Aragorn to a black character. In the Lord of the Rings text, J.R.R. Tolkien introduced Aragorn (aka Strider/King Elessar) with the following description based on Frodo’s first meeting with the Ranger:

As Frodo drew near be threw back his hood, showing a shaggy head of dark hair flecked with grey, and in a pale stern face a pair of keen grey eyes.

By contrast, the Aragorn depicted in the artwork for Tales of Middle-earth is black. Hardcore fans of the Tolkien lore and mythos have expressed disappointment to downright outrage over this radical change. These same groups of fans have called out this modification as "woke", cultural appropriation, and pandering to a certain demographic, rather than sticking to the traditional depiction of the character.

magic-the-gathering-mtg-lord-of-the-rings-lotr-elijah-wood-aragorn-interpretation-ELESSAR
A number of Tolkien fans have negative reactions to the interpretation of some of the Tales of Middle-earth characters, particularly that of Aragorn/King Elessar as a black character. Aragorn was described as "pale faced with gray eyes" in the J.R.R. Tolkien novels and was previously played by Viggo Mortensen (pictured) in the Peter Jackson-directed LoTR movies produced by New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures.

Wizards of the Coast issued a reaction to the negative feedback regarding the depiction of the characters on the Magic: The Gathering official website:

Some characters may look different from previous depictions—and that's intentional. Great works of art like The Lord of the Rings are only enhanced by having multiple interpretations in the world. We believe ours will bring joy to many, many fans of both Magic and Tolkien. This fresh update was a conscious choice made in partnership between Wizards and MEE and was driven by two guiding principles:

  • Diversity: The Lord of the Rings is about the different peoples of Middle-earth coming together to fight Sauron, finding strength in their diversity. Fans of all backgrounds have been enjoying these stories, characters, and locations for decades, and we wanted this set to reflect on that broad inclusion.
  • Originality: The goal of this set is to express the story and setting of The Lord of the Rings through Magic: The Gathering Countless prior efforts have painted vivid pictures of this world, but our goal is a modern take on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, lovingly crafted for an ever-expanding fandom.

Our hope is that more people will see themselves reflected in the characters and that players and fans can find immense joy in telling these familiar stories through gameplay.

While Elijah Wood did not comment on this change to one of the central characters of The Lord of the Rings, the actor did appear in a separate clip addressing the idea of interpretation. In the clip promoting Tales of Middle-earth, Wood looked at one of the cards in the set named You Cannot Pass. The card itself is an Instant spell with one white mana as its casting cost that destroys a creature blocked by or is blocking a Legendary creature on that turn.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf (played by Sir Ian Mckellen), confronted the Balrog and defiantly shouted "You… shall not… pass!" Wood asked for a copy of the book and quoted the written text, confirming that Gandalf did indeed say "You CANNOT pass" twice. The actor ended the clip by saying "that settles it", cheekily affirming that the book is the canon and anything else, including the movie and the card game crossover with Magic: The Gathering, are merely interpretations.

The Universes Beyond Magic: The Gathering – Tales of Middle-earth booster packs, starter sets, and limited-edition collector boxes are scheduled to release on June 23, 2023.

Ernie Reyes Jr. has had a lengthy career playing in martial arts roles, starting with The Last Dragon (1985) when he was only 13. He has also starred in Red Sonja (1985), Surf Ninjas (1993), Rush Hour 2 (2001), The Rundown (2003), and appeared in multiple TV and movie roles over the years. However, he is probably best known as the pizza delivery guy and martial arts enthusiast who made friends with the "Heroes in a Half-shell" in the sequel to the 1990 live action film.

The full reveal of the figure was posted on NECA's Instagram account. Ernie Reyes Jr. himself shared the full reveal of the SDCC Keno exclusive action figure on his Twitter account.

The Keno action figure has optional interchangeable heads based on the actor’s likeness as he appeared in the 1991 film. The picture also reveals the box has additional interchangeable hands, a scooter, and accessories such as a Roy’s Pizza box and bag. As with the standard set by NECA toys, the Keno action figure has multiple points of articulation and the included accessories are highly detailed.

Ernie Reyes Jr.'s role as pizza delivery boy and martial arts enthusiast Keno was created specifically for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze movie.

NECA actually teased the Keno action figure in December 2022, as part of its annual "12 Days of Downloads":

It’s our tradition to commemorate the year with an updated set of visual guides to our most popular action figure lines. Every day leading up to Christmas we’ll post a new visual guide as an extra-large download. Use them as checklists, posters, whatever you desire… and be sure to keep an eye out for some surprises!

The visual guide includes figures based on the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action film and its sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. There are also figures for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Musical Mutagen Tour and a crossover set with the Universal Monsters.

The Musical Mutagen Tour action figure set appears to be paying homage to the Coming Out of Their Shells studio album and live musical concert tour that took place from 1990 to 1992. Meanwhile, the TMNT x Universal Monsters action figure set has the Turtles, Master Splinter, Casey Jones, and April O’Neil cosplaying as one of the classic Universal Monsters.

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-tmnt-sdcc-neca-exclusive-1990
Before his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze role, Ernie Reyes Jr. was actually the suit actor for Donatello in 1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. That first film would become the highest grossing box office independent film for a time.

Interestingly, the visual guide would technically include two figures played by Ernie Reyes Jr. Before the actor played the role of Keno in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, he was also the suit actor for Donatello in the 1990 movie. As Donatello, he also did the martial arts sequences showcased in the first film.

The Keno NECA Toys exclusive action figure will be available at the San Diego Comic-Con running from July 19 to July 23, 2023. Meanwhile, the next film based on the TMNT, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be released on August 2, 2023.

WoTC raises Dungeons & Dragons product prices and fans are livid https://www.xfire.com/wotc-dungeons-and-dragons-product-price-increase-ttrpg/ https://www.xfire.com/wotc-dungeons-and-dragons-product-price-increase-ttrpg/#respond Mon, 29 May 2023 02:22:28 +0000 https://www.xfire.com/?p=288295 Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast confirms new physical products of the world’s most popular tabletop roleplaying game will have a significant price increase. And some fans are not happy.

wotc-dungeons-and-dragons-product-price-increase-ttrpg-FEATURED
Wizards of the Coast announces the increase by up to 20% of Dungeons & Dragons physical products, angering some fans of the TTRPG community. (Images: Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro)

Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS) and its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast (WotC) have been accused of overmonetizing its popular IPs Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. But the higher ups have taken a stance that these brands are undermonetized and assured investors this will be addressed. Dungeons & Dragons, in particular, has received a large marketing and multimedia push with a recent live action film and upcoming television projects, including a 24/7 free streaming, ad-supported channel.

Could the price increase adversely impact the D&D brand? Some TTRPG fans feel this way.

The community update was posted on the D&D Beyond official website and shared on the company’s social media channels like Twitter.

According to the announcement, the decision to implement the price increase is made to balance out the cost of publishing with the high quality D&D fans expect from their products:

Since the release of the 2014 D&D core rulebooks, we’ve kept book prices stable. Unfortunately, with the cost of goods and shipping continually increasing, we’ve finally had to make the decision to increase the price of our new release print books. We’re committed to creating high-quality products that deliver great value to our players and must increase our prices to accomplish that.

The first D&D Fifth Edition product that will reflect this price increase will be Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants. However, digital releases of products will not have a price increase, nor will backlist titles. Still, the company does add the disclaimer that this may not be a permanent status quo:

Digital pricing is unaffected by this MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price) increase, as digital products don’t need to be printed or shipped. The increase also doesn’t impact backlist titles. While we can’t promise that there will never be a change to the prices of digital products and backlist titles, we have no plans to increase either.

Dungeons & Dragons fans on the Reddit r/DnD thread pointed out the price-vs.-content disparity. One of them compared the price of Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants to the earlier released Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons.

The supplement Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants will be the first D&D Fifth Edition product to reflect the price increase announced by WotC.

The upcoming Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants book has 192 pages priced at $69.95 for the standard price. On the other hand, Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is $59.95 for the digital + physical bundle with 224 pages. Some fans have pointed out that this is evidence that not only is WotC increasing the price, but also giving "less bang for your buck".

But while there are critics and pundits that find the price increase of Dungeons & Dragons products to be predatory, other fans have a more reasonable response. In the aforementioned r/DnD Reddit thread, some have pointed out that inflation is a significant factor to the price change. Additionally, these fans mention how Wizards of the Coast are only increasing prices now, when they could have done so even earlier during the height of the pandemic as supply chains were largely affected. Plus, raising the prices today would not only be reasonable, but practical to line up with the increasing prices of paper products.

Regardless of the logical (and perhaps necessary) reasons for the price increase of Dungeons & Dragons physical products, it comes with arguably bad timing. Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro has been under the critical microscope of both fans and third party creators of the D&D brand. The Open Gaming License controversy is still fresh in the minds of the TTRPG community.

WoTC confirms that while physical products will have price increases, the digital products and backlist titles will not--- at least for now.

And while the unpopular plans for OGL 1.1 and OGL 1.2 have mostly been abandoned, the negative impact is still being felt, not the least of which is the boycott of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves that affected its box office performance. Time will tell if the long term impact of these price increases will adversely effect the Dungeons & Dragons brand as it heads to its 50th anniversary in 2024 with an updated Fifth Edition ruleset under the One D&D promotion.

The Dungeons & Dragons supplement Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants bundle pre-order is currently available for $59.95 on the official store, to be shipped starting August 15, 2023.

2023 marks the 17th Anniversary of the longest-running MMO officially licensed with the Dungeons & Dragons brand from Wizards of the Coast. The game itself uses a modified version of the D&D 3.5 Edition ruleset released under the Open Gaming License, although it has also adopted some 5th Edition content such as races, character class abilities, feats, and spells.

Standing Stone Games held a month-long celebration earlier this year, giving away a ton of adventure and quest packs with the code DUNGEONCRAWL. But while that anniversary event is over, the game recently started its newest Hardcore season featuring a new twist to the mechanics.

Hardcore Season 8 of Dungeons & Dragons Online started on May 17, with the subtitle The Dragon’s Hoard.

While the game already features a lot of exploration and looting treasures as with any fantasy MMORPG, DDO’s Hardcore Season 8 adds a new flair to it during the event. There will be a special treasure chest that can be found in certain optional areas in various quests. While these optional areas are usually ignored when parties are "zerging" the quests, these will be the only places that will spawn the eponymous Dragon’s Hoard treasures on the Hardcore server for the duration.

dungeons-and-dragons-online-hardcore-season-8-scavenger-hunt-PERMADEATH
DDO's Hardcore seasons features permadeath. Characters who perish will respawn in a void and cannot re-enter except at the end of the Hardcore events.

The list below features the quests discovered to have the optional Dragon’s Hoard treasures and what character level they are in. Some quests have both a Heroic and Epic version, as indicated:

  • Sacrifices – Level 1
  • Immortality Lessons – Level 6/Epic Level 32
  • The Pit – Level 7
  • Into the Deep – Level 9/Epic Level 21
  • An Invitation to Dinner – Level 10/Epic Level 32
  • The Chamber of Raiyum – Level 12/Epic Level 22
  • Mired in Kobolds – Level 13
  • Madstone Crater – Level 14/Epic Level 24
  • Search and Rescue – Level 15/Epic Level 31
  • Servants of the Overlord – Level 16/Epic Level 21
  • Roll Call – Level 16 /Epic Level 32
  • A Study in Sable – Epic Level 26
  • Desecrated Temple of Vol – Epic Level 29

Note that quest areas in Hardcore have a lockout of +2 levels. This means if your character has more than 2 levels higher than the quest level, you cannot enter it. It should also be noted that this is not the final list of quests where the Dragon’s Hoard chests might be found.

On that note, finding the optional paths to get the Dragon’s Hoard is just the first part. Players still need to beat the boss enemies found at these locations. Given that the Dungeons & Dragons Online Hardcore server features perma-death, survival is of the utmost importance. And the current Hardcore Season makes this second part more difficult, as mobs will have additional magical resistance and elemental spell power than their regular counterparts.

Plus, Kobolds and Dragons will have double the bonuses. These enemies tend to throw Lightning Bolts and Fire Breath at pesky adventurers, so get your Reflex saves as high as you can!

dungeons-and-dragons-online-hardcore-season-8-scavenger-hunt-DEATHWALKER
The eighth Hardcore season on Dungeons & Dragons Online will reward exclusive cosmetic items, such as the Death Walker's Sash and Cloak, for characters that reach certain milestones.

The rewards for Hardcore Season 8 of Dungeons & Dragons Online are as follows:

  • 1750 Favor: Glittery Golden Eyes Toggle
  • Reach Level 20: Death Walkers Sash VIII
  • Gain 10 Reaper Enhancement Points: Death Walker's Cloak VIII
  • Gain 20 Reaper Enhancement Points: Solid Gold Mimic Creature Companion

Unlike previous Hardcore seasons on DDO, there is no special reward for reaching 5000 Favor. Instead, the treasure hunt for the Dragon’s Hoard effectively replaces it. On that note, the exact reward for turning in the required 7 treasures has not been specified, although there are speculations that it is Golden Footprints (similar to the Blood Red Footprints cosmetic).

dungeons-and-dragons-online-hardcore-season-8-scavenger-hunt-MIMIC
A golden Mimic pet can be acquired in Hardcore season 8 (though probably just as hungry as the one Holga encountered in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves).

Once a character reaches the capstones required, they can claim their Hardcore season rewards via the special NPC found at the Hall of Heroes, The Grotto, Shipwreck Shore, or in Korthos Village. For this season, the NPC is Zazerbaxk, the Not Yet Terrible.

At the end of DDO Hardcore Season 8, two leaderboards will be permanently added to the Hall of Heroes. One leaderboard will identify the top 100 characters who gained the highest total Favor. The other leaderboard will indicate the top 100 characters who accumulated the highest Reaper XP. Note that the character must survive to the end of the Hardcore season. If they die prior to it, they will be removed from the leaderboard tracking.

For more details about the Dungeons & Dragons Online Hardcore Season 8, check the official DDO website. Hardcore Season 8 - The Dragon’s Hoard will run until 9:00 AM EST July 19, 2023.

Despite recent Open Gaming License controversy, Dungeons & Dragons remains the world’s most popular tabletop roleplaying game and has crossed over to other media since its inception. One of the earliest and beloved examples of these is the classic Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon from 1983. Plus, D&D has been referenced in pop culture franchises such as Stranger Things, The Big Bang Theory, Community, and even had its own big screen movie with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

But how does a 24/7 streaming channel with nothing but Dungeons & Dragons content sound? Check out the details revealed so far.

The exclusive report comes via Variety and shared by Entertainment One (eOne) on their official social media channels such as Twitter:

According to the report, eOne is developing Dungeons & Dragons Adventures, a FAST (free, ad-supported streaming) channel. It will be available on multiple platforms, though no specifics have been given as of the time of this writing.

But the big question is will there be enough D&D-centric content to fill a 24/7 streaming channel lineup? Apparently, the Dungeons & Dragons Adventures FAST channel will include unscripted celebrity-focused series and third party content from internet creators and influencers.

dungeons-and-dragons-free-streaming-fast-channel-hasbro-eone-ENCOUNTER-PARTY
The Dungeons & Dragons Adventures FAST (free, ad-supported streaming) channel will feature content and shows exclusively dedicated to D&D material, many of which are by third-party celebrities and influencers.

Dan Rawson, Senior Vice President of Wizards of Coast in charge of the Dungeons & Dragons brand states:

This is an amazing opportunity to create and highlight exciting, engaging Dungeons & Dragons content, to both serve our wide audience of existing fans and welcome a new wave of fans to the community. We look forward to bringing this channel to life and continuing to build out the thrilling D&D universe with even more content, partnerships and innovative formats.

So far, the shows eOne has revealed in the Variety news report include:

  • Encounter Party! – Similar to the highly successful Critical Role actual play, Encounter Party! is a podcast comprised of professional voice actors playing D&D. While the first campaign was under their independent production, the second campaign will be an official Dungeons & Dragons show under the new FAST channel.
  • Heroes’ Feast – This show will be based on the bestselling cookbook of the same name. Heroes’ Feast is actually a spell from the Dungeons & Dragons rules that creates, well, a heroes’ feast that player characters can consume to gain sustenance and significant bonuses to their abilities for a limited time. Heroes’ Feast will feature Chef Mike Haracz and Sujata Day in this combination cooking, competition, and talk show.
  • Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill! – The show is a part actual play, part improv comedy sketch. Each episode will have a revolving table of celebrities playing D&D with low level characters. Co-produced by Beadle and Grimm’s, Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill! already has a number of episodes streamed on Peacock, G4TV, Twitch, and YouTube. Celebrities that have previously appeared include Matthew Lillard (who is also the series co-creator), B. Dave Watlers, Deborah Ann Woll, and Seth Green.
  • Other than these 3 productions, the Dungeons & Dragons Adventures FAST channel will also stream the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon in its entirety, similar to The Transformers and G.I. Joe animated series that are regularly streamed on Hasbro Pulse.

eOne is a subsidiary of Hasbro that is primarily involved in the acquisition, production, and distribution of television shows and movies. Beginning as Records on Wheels Limited in 1970, the company rebranded to ROW Entertainment in 1980 and E1 Entertainment in 2009, before being acquired by Hasbro in 2019.

    dungeons-and-dragons-free-streaming-fast-channel-hasbro-eone-HEROES-FEAST
The format of Heroes' Feast will be part-cooking show, part-talk show, and part-competition.

The company has had a slew of successful film and television productions. Among them are Peppa Pig, The Rookie, Yellowjackets, Moonshine, Power Rangers Dino Fury, The Fabelmans, and The Woman King. eOne also collaborated with Paramount Pictures for the live action Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie. eOne is also working on new projects for Hasbro’s other big IPs including The Transformers, G.I. Joe, Clue, My Little Pony, and Play-Doh.

As of the time of this writing, no official announcement has been made as to the date of the Dungeons & Dragons Adventures FAST channel launch, although it is targeted for summer 2023.
