Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves adds Magic: The Gathering to its marketing muscle, as the main cast members are immortalized in a Secret Lair Drop.

This comes as part of the D&D Direct releases which will lead into the 50th anniversary celebration of Dungeons & Dragons in 2024. Secret Lair is a special sub-brand for Magic: The Gathering which releases limited edition cards. While it started with reprints of older MTG cards with new art, it expanded to testing new ideas and crossovers with other pop culture fan favorites, beginning with The Walking Dead.
Plus, D&D had previously crossed over with MTG in 2021’s Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms.
The announcement was initially presented during the D&D Direct event online. Afterwards, the preorder link went live on the MTG Secret Lair website.

The six cards feature the characters with the likenesses of the actors from the film. They are all Legendary Creatures, which means only one of them can be in play under the same player’s control. This is similar to the legendary creatures from other sets, including the recent crossover with the LOTR franchise Tales of Middle-earth.
The Honor Among Thieves cards come with unique abilities and combo potential for the Magic: The Gathering meta. For example, one card has Edgin (played by Chris Pine), a blue/red Human Bard that gives Foretell to nonland cards in the player’s hand. Foretell is a useful ability that allows the player to pay 2 colorless mana and exile the card, allowing it to be played on a later turn for 2 less colorless mana to cast.
Plus, Edgin can goad a creature to attack, which forces the opponent to choose a player to be attacked (other than the player who used goad, if possible). This is very useful in Commander and other multiplayer formats.
According to Wizards of the Coast, this set will be part of the Universes Beyond sub-group of sets for the CCG. While these cards will be playable in limited formats, this opens up the possibility that they will be reprinted in future sets with the same mana cost, stats, and abilities for the Universes Within sub-group. A similar treatment was done for the Transformers crossover that brought Hasbro’s Robots-in-Disguise to Magic: The Gathering.
The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Secret Lair cards will be tournament legal for Commander format and Eternal formats, including Legacy and Vintage. Per the overview of the special Secret Lair Drop:
Six legendary adventurers have leapt down from the big screen to delve into the depths of Secret Lair! Now you can bring your own action-packed stories to life as you battle friends and foes with all-new cards featuring Edgin, Holga, Zenk, Simon, Doric, and Forge from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. And it won’t take a high perception check to notice the stunning art.
Prices for the preorder of the six limited edition MTG Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves cards are $39.99 for the non-foil versions and $49.99 for the foil variants.
Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves officially releases on March 31, 2023 and will only remain available to order until April 23, 2023.
