What is Pokémon Unite?
Pokémon Unite is a MOBA strategy battle game developed by TiMi Studio Group and published by The Pokémon Company. This entry in the Pokémon franchise was released in 2021. The game has reached over 80 million downloads since its release date.
The game’s main location is set in Aeos Island. Instead of single 1v1 battles, Pokémon Unite focuses on 5v5 matches called Unite Battles. A standard match battle between two teams consists of five players each. Each match has duration of 10 minutes. There are scoring areas for each team, and the team with the highest score after a match wins.
To start the match, players will select any Pokémon in their stable, and then other teammates can choose their own Pokémon. Each Pokémon has 5 different roles: Speedster, Attacker, Defender, Supporter, and All-rounder. This is very similar with how other MOBAs, like DOTA 2 or Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, handle different roles such as Tank, Melee and Range DPS, Jungler, Nuker, and Support.
Players can defeat wild Pokémon to level up and evolve their existing Pokémon. After leveling up, the Unite Move gauge can be charged completely full to use the Unite Move for powerful attacks.
They can also collect Aeos Energy by completing matches. Aeos Energy can be found in the Aeos Island locations. It can be used to increase Pokémons’ strength and gain or improve their unique abilities. Players can also customize their Pokémon and Trainers with different appearances and outfits, including Holowear, a holographic outfit with different styles.
The in-game Unite Battle has other game modes like Ranked and Quick battle. Ranked battle is also a 5v5 battle with ranking system and players can reach up to 6 ranks. To qualify for Ranked battle, players must have reached at least level 6. Meanwhile, Quick battle can be played in 3v3 or 4v4 battles for 5 minutes and has a limited number of maps. This mode can be played by new or experienced players to develop their familiarity of the game mechanics.
Pokémon Unite is available for the Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS devices. The game features cross-platform play which allows players to play together, regardless of whether they use the Nintendo Switch or mobile devices. Pokémon Unite can be downloaded on the Google Play Store and Apple Store.
