One of the biggest titles in the Sony Playstation 2 library, Gran Turismo 4 (aka GT4) was released way back in 2004. Developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, the game featured 700-plus cars from history as early as 1886.

Aside from the critical acclaim, Gran Turismo 4 was a huge financial success, becoming the third best-selling game of all time for the PS2 console. The Gran Turismo franchise has since become an iconic racing title, with a live action film coming later this year.

Twitter user Nenkaai posted his discovery through a series of tweets on the social media platform.

Because of this new discovery, Gran Turismo 4 is now historically the first title in the GT series confirmed to have in-game cheat codes.

So what are these codes? Well, before we get to the codes, there is a small caveat: 365 in-game days need to have passed in order for you to do the cheat. Note that each time a player participates in an event in GT 4, one in-game day will pass. You can check what the total number of days have passed in the Garage interface.

Gran Turismo 4 featured 700+ cars, ranging from the earliest ones from 1886 to concept cars of the 2020s.

Once the requisite number of days have passed, enter the following codes using the PS2 game controller on the appropriate screen (as noted in the instructions):

  • Instantly get 10.000.000 Cr: Select, Left, Right, Right, Down, Up, Up, Left, Down, Up, Right, Left, Down, L1, R1, and Select. This can be done on the GT Mode screen.
  • Pass any license: Press Select, R1, Select, R1, Select, L2, L2, R2, R2, L1, Select, L1, and Select.
  • Get a Gold rating for a specific license test. Select, Select, R1, R2, L2, L2, Select, L1, R1, Select, R2, L1, and Select. This should be done on the License Selection screen.
  • Get a Gold rating for any Event: Select, L1, Up, Up, Select, R1, Down, Down, Select, L2, Select, R2, Select. This code can be entered on the Event Course Selection screen. Players will also receive the appropriate prize for getting the Gold rating on the Event, which is useful for those 24-hour long races. However, this particular cheat code does not always work.

An additional, interesting tidbit is that the License and Event codes will work on Tourist Trophy: The Real Riding Simulator. This motorcycle racing game came out in 2006 and was also developed by Polyphony Digital for the PS2. To use these codes in Tourist Trophy, 365 in-game days will also need to have passed.

Users on Reddit are speculating that this might not be the complete list of cheats for Gran Turismo 4. Moreover, if GT 4 had these codes hidden for nearly two decades, perhaps the other games in the franchise might have undiscovered cheats as well.

The newest GT title Gran Turismo 7 was released in 2022 and is currently available for the Sony Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 consoles.
