In what's perhaps one of the least surprising things to come out of this year's WWE Backlash PPV, a majority of WWE talent have voiced their thoughts about making Puerto Rico the permanent home of the celebrated event.
Here's what the report by Mike Johnson of PWInsider Elite said about the talks of bringing Backlash to the beautiful city of San Juan, Puerto Rico, every year going forward:
The talk backstage at the Backlash PPV among the talents was that they hoped the company would make San Juan a permanent home for the show, feeling the crowd reactions for both Smackdown and the PPV were at 'Wrestlemania' levels and made the post-Mania PPV the most important the event had been in years.
Backlash is a WWE staple and is traditionally rotated across different venues around the world. Moving it to one permanent home would represent a significant shift from what's usually done in the WWE. But, you can't deny that the proposition is interesting, to say the least.
Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, which only adds an exciting twist to this development.
As previously mentioned, Puerto Rico recently hosted this year's WWE Backlash, to much critical acclaim. The highlight of the event, Bad Bunny's win over Damian Priest, saw fans go wild after the San Juan Street Fight match featured several local wrestling legends, including Carlito's first appearance in WWE for a long time. The segment was so popular that there are now talks of the WWE and Carlito possibly signing a new deal for his return.
Another markedly beautiful moment from the event is when the crowd gave Brock Lesnar a standing ovation following his loss to Cody Rhodes, which left him bloodied and shocked at the results.
Obviously, the idea, if it's true, is likely still in its nascent stages. This proposal will have to go through the wringer first as WWE management weighs out the pros and cons before making a final decision.
We likely won't find out what the WWE's plans for next year's Backlash are going to be until we're closer to the event.
But, should this change materialize, it will elevate Puerto Rico's status in the wrestling world as well as its local economy. A permanent WWE event in the country will drive tourism, create jobs, and enhance the already ravenous demand for the sport among locals.
For now, WWE fans can look forward to Night of Champions, which is now confirmed to feature Seth Rollins as one of the contenders for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and a rematch between Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar.
