Ramsey Avery, the production designer on Captain America: New World Order, has teased that the forthcoming sequel will have a "very grounded" and realistic tone, compared to the newer MCU films, hinting that the film will deviate from space-jumping, time-traveling, and the abstract tone of the more recent movies.
Avery made this revelation during a recent interview with Collider, where he also talked about his work on Amazon’s Rings of Power and compared both projects.
According to him, the two productions are similar in that they both have established backstories. He went on to state that the backstories are present in other places apart from the movies.
In his words, "Not only within the movies themselves now, but there's also still the parts and pieces that they choose from publishing to feed into all of that."
Speaking on Captain America 4, which some sources have said will get a title change, Avery stated Marvel is approaching the film in a different, more "forward-thinking" way. He revealed that the production team intends for the film "to be very grounded" such that it portrays the feeling it is "happening in the world."
He further stated, "So it's a different sense in a lot of ways than particularly some of the more recent pieces have been. And it's a very deliberate choice, and it's a fascinating choice and an exciting choice. And it comes with a whole host of different kinds of questions involved in that."
Captain America: New World Order will continue the events of the 2021 Disney+ television miniseries, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It will follow Sam Wilson, formerly known as Falcon, as he assumes the role of America’s greatest defender Captain America.
The film sees Anthony Mackie return as Wilson/Captain America, while Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly reprise their roles as Joaquin Torres/Falcon and Isaiah Bradley respectively. Tim Blake Nelson and Liv Tyler will also reprise their roles as Mr. Blue and Betty Ross from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
Other members of the film’s cast are Shira Haas, Harrison Ford, Xosha Roquemore, Rosa Salazar, and WWE’s Seth Rollins. Ford replaces William Hurt as General Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross after Hurt’s demise last year. Also, the character will have some conflict with the film's titular character, Mackie's Sam Wilson, according to one of the film's producers Nate Moore.
While there is no official confirmation, Salazar will reportedly play the film’s villain Diamondback and, alongside Rollins, is a member of Serpent Society.
Julius Onah, who helmed The Cloverfield Paradox, serves as director, while Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson developed the script. Kevin Feie and Moore produce the film.
Captain America: New World Order is slated to arrive in theaters on May 3, 2024.
