Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has the second-biggest domestic opening this year

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse records Sony’s biggest-ever opening for an animated film.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has racked up a whopping $120.5 million at the domestic box office in its debut weekend, with an outpour of praise from fans who have gone to watch the hyped up sequel to the most popular animated superhero feature in recent times.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse chronicles Miles Morales attempt to save the Spider People society.

With this figure, the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse boasts the second-biggest opening of every film in North Africa this year, behind fellow animated film The Super Mario Bros. Movie which grossed $146 million in its debut weekend.

The film also recorded the highest gross of every film that showed at the domestic box office this past weekend. Disney’s The Little Mermaid, which debuted the week before, took second place with $40.6 million – a 57% decline from its debut weekend when it grossed $95.6 million.

What’s more, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has the third-biggest domestic opening for a Spider-Man film, after 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and 2007’s Spider-Man 3, with $260 million and $151 million respectively.

Given the film’s predecessor grossed only around 1/3 of this number, its box office performance shows promise and demonstrates that the film has a loyal fanbase that has swelled since the first film’s release, which has become a late-bloomer showered with praise to this day.

This bodes well for the franchise, especially since another installment is scheduled to arrive in March 2024. In international markets, Across the Spider-Verse has grossed $88.1 million, which brings its global gross to $208.6 million.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently the second highest-grossing debut film this year.

Of the 59 international markets where the film has launched, China leads with $17.3 million. Mexico and the UK took the second and third positions with $11.6 million and $11.5 million respectively. In fourth place is Australia, with $5.3 million, while Brazil and France occupy the fifth place with $3.7 million each.

Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse follows Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy on a mission to save their fellow Spider People from the Spot, a villain who threatens their very existence. On their quest, they journey across the multiverse and take on several adventures.

Across the Spider-Verse continues the tradition began by the first film in the series and has received almost unanimously positive critical reviews. For one, it has a 95% average Rotten Tomatoes rating. The film has also been well received by audiences, which is evident from its box office performance.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse features an ensemble voice cast that includes Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld who reprise their voice roles as Morales and Stacy respectively. It also stars Brian Tyree Henry, Issa Rae, Oscar Isaac, Daniel Kaluuya, Mahershala Ali, and Jason Schwartzmann.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is impressing both critics and audiences alike.

Following the first film’s debut in 2018, many fans clamored for a spinoff cum standalone project that will star the Nicolas Cage character Spider-Man Noir. While the project went dark since its announcement, the franchise’s creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller promised last month that it is still in the works.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently showing in theaters all over the world except for South Korea and Japan where it will make its debut later this month. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which will round up the animated trilogy, is slated for release on March 29, 2024.
