Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is one of the most highly anticipated films this year. Although it is still some time away, it is already on the lips of movie fans everywhere.
Earlier this year, we found out that the film, originally imagined as a story set in the Star Wars universe, will be split into two parts. Now, Snyder has confirmed that there will actually be four parts. Don’t get us wrong, Rebel Moon will only have two features. However, those features will also have extended cuts that the director said will be strictly for adults.
He told Vanity Fair, "I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them."
Snyder’s wife and co-owner of the production company The Stone Quarry provided more insight into how the film was split into two in the first place. She told Vanity Fair that Snyder’s script was so long it would have churned out a film that is almost three hours.
Unfortunately, Netflix film chairman Scott Stuber wanted a film that was less than two hours because they performed better on the streaming platform. Snyder resisted this attempt to limit the story he wanted to tell, though, and Stuber asked him to make two films instead.
Her comments are in line with what Netflix VP Ori Marmur said in January. According to him, Snyder’s vision for Rebel Moon was too vast and would be better served as two films; hence, the decision.
This is not the first time we will hear that Rebel Moon will have extended versions. Back in March, we told you of a similar claim by Andy Koyama, a re-recording mixer who is part of the crew.
But, this marks the first time we're hearing it from someone high up in the film's chain of command.
Rebel Moon’s story sounds very intriguing and its trailer feeds our already high expectations of the forthcoming space opera. One other thing that makes us very excited about this film is its stellar cast.
Sofia Boutella, who delivered riveting performances in Star Trek Beyond, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Atomic Blonde will captain this starship that has Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman, and Ray Fisher on board.
By the way, Snyder and Netflix are hoping that Rebel Moon kicks off a franchise that cuts across all types of media. In March, the Justice League director revealed that there is a Rebel Moon RPG in the works, which he described as immersive, intense, and huge. While we have no idea what the game will be like, Snyder’s enthusiasm has definitely whetted fans’ appetites, including ours.
However, we do not expect any concrete news on the project until after the first film debuts.
Right now, we do not know when the streamer will release Rebel Moon Part II. Snyder assures us it won’t be long after the first one, though, because Netflix doesn’t operate like other studios.
In his words, "Netflix can do things that a traditional studio can’t do as far as how close together the movies are released."
Rebel Moon: Part One will land in theaters on December 22.
