John Carpenter-inspired action horror video game is coming in 2024

John Carpenter teams up with Saber Interactive for a shooter horror video game in the style of his cinematic creations.

John Carpenter is a popular name in the horror movie industry. The iconic filmmaker, actor, and composer has worked on many horror movies since the late ‘70s. If you are a fan of the horror genre, you will have come across some of his works, such as Escape from New York (1981), Escape from L.A. (1996), and The Ward (2010).

John Carpenter's Toxic Commandos is a horror shooter co-op video game that will arrive next year.

Now, almost fifty years into his illustrious career, Carpenter has created a horror video game, titled John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando – the first time he will working on such a project.

We first heard about the game at the Summer Games Fest livestream on Thursday where its developers, Saber Interactive and Focus Home Entertainment, unveiled a trailer that does justice to Carpenter’s legacy.

Toxic Commando is one of several thrilling announcements that were made at Summer Game Fest, which includes a new adventure game from Bandai Namco, Lies of P's release date, and Kazuma Kiryu's return in Like a Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

Carpenter also released a statement, where he expressed his excitement at being a part of the title. He said, "It’s exciting to be collaborating on a new video game with Focus and Saber. Look, I really like shooting zombies. They keep telling me that they’re called ’the infected.’ Please. They’re ghouls, dude. They blow up real good and there are a ton of them. People are going to love this game.

The game tries to switch things up with its plot. It tells a story that involves an experiment gone awry, the awakening of an entity called the Sludge-God, and that entity’s ability to transform the average, everyday person into a ghoul.

Fortunately, the head of the experiment knows how to set things right. However, he needs a group of competent and highly-trained mercenaries to do this.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando seems like an easy enough game. As far as we can tell, you will be tasked with killing a lottttt of zombies on your way to what we presume is a showdown with the Sludge God. With the vast array of weapons – guns, grenades, katanas, and more – at your disposal to accomplish this task, we presume there won’t be any dull moment in the game.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando will provide the player with numerous weapons to accomplish their mission.

We should mention that the game is a co-op shooter which means you can participate in a team with your friends.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is the latest in a long line of video games – including World War Z, SnowRunner, Space Marine 2, and Insurgency – that is the result of a partnership between Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive.

None of the parties involved in the game have revealed its release date beyond stating that it will be ready by next year. Nevertheless, we know it will be available on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.

By the way, Carpenter hinted that a Dead Space feature film adaptation is on the way last January. However, the horror genre master won’t be involved, in what will be disappointing news to fans of his work.

In the meantime, you can wishlist Toxic Commando on Epic Games Store. You can also sign up for a Closed Beta test on the game’s website.
