Brace up for John Wick: Chapter 4's director cut

Despite lasting a whopping 2 hours 49 minutes, John Wick: Chapter 4 is about to get even longer with the release of the Director's Cut.

John Wick might be dead but his story is not over. According to Chad Stahelski, the director of the long-running franchise, the fourth installment will get a director’s cut that will feature even more footage.

Chad Stahelski has been at the helm of all films in the John Wick franchise.

Stahelski revealed this detail during a recent interview with Comic Book Movie where he discussed everything about the film, including members of the cast, the character’s supposed death, and the franchise’s future plans.

When he was asked about his plans for an extended cut, he responded with the following, "Yeah, I've been working on the Director's Cut, the extended cut, which we've almost finished."

He stated that there are about 10 to 15 minutes of footage that will be included in the extended cut. Apparently, a large part of the story that took place in Berlin, involving a character called The Frau, was removed from the film.

In his words, "We cut out a big chunk of Berlin, a whole character called The Frau, which is a pretty funny scene with John, and another scene between him and Tracker, a few other little action beats that we put back in."

Stahelski went on to explain the reason why these scenes didn’t make the film in the first place. He revealed that, in the filmmaking business, they sometimes remove scenes because they don’t "fit the pacing" even if they are of the highest quality and well put together.

"It just didn't - as a whole, it changed the pace of the film, and I didn't think I could get, you know, two hour and 38 minute film in there if it felt slow. I think we got away with it because it felt driven, it felt like it was very purposeful, and I didn't want to upset that pace. And, if it has to go, it has to go," he stated.

Even though John Wick seemingly died at the end of the fourth film, there are plans for a fifth film.

As for an actual continuation of the John Wick franchise, there's already a plan in place to do a fifth installment. However, this will likely have to wait until Chad Stahelski frees up his schedule. The stuntman-turned-director has his hands full with the live-action adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, which is currently in heavy development. Finally, he's expected to take a break sooner rather than later, so that's also an issue.

In the meantime, fans of the franchise can look forward to two spinoffs that will arrive in quick succession. The first one is titled The Continental and will be available on Peacock this September while the second, titled Ballerina, will arrive on June 7, 2024.

We currently don’t have a definitive date for John Wick: Chapter 4’s extended cut. When that changes, you can trust we will tell you about it.
