Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is reportedly getting a sequel

Given the history of disappointing film adaptations, Resident Evil fans have learned not to set high expectations for potential live-action films.

Yes, you've read that right! Reports suggest that a sequel to the 2021 action-horror film, which received massively negative criticism from both critics and audiences, is currently being developed. And if that revelation wasn't surprising enough, we have an even bigger surprise: the government has a vested interest in this project.

A new live action Resident Evil film is reportedly in the works

According to Sudbury.com, the Greater Sudbury area will receive $11 million in funding from the provincial government. It will come through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, which aims to support various local initiatives. Among the beneficiaries of this fund is a film project titled "Umbrella Chronicles," which is slated to receive $2 million in financial support.

The production of Umbrella Chronicles will be helmed by Raccoon HG Film Productions, the same company responsible for overseeing the production of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in Greater Sudbury.

While information about the project remains scarce, fans of the Resident Evil franchise will immediately recognize the title "Umbrella Chronicles" from the 2007 Capcom game, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

The Wii version of Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles has sold over 1.4 million copies worldwide.

The on-rails light gun shooter game presents the stories of previous games in the Resident Evil series, including Resident Evil 0, the 2002 Resident Evil remake, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Through a first-person perspective, the game unveils the events that ultimately led to the downfall of Umbrella Corporation. It features three scenarios with sub-stories that delve into previously unseen events, all narrated by the recurring antagonist, Albert Wesker.

Despite the mixed reviews it received, Welcome to Raccoon City is widely regarded as the most faithful adaptation of the Resident Evil games within the entire film franchise.

In contrast to the Paul W. S. Anderson films, which introduced the original character Alice, portrayed by Milla Jovovich, WTRC stayed true to the source material by focusing on the established characters from the game series, such as Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, and Claire and Chris Redfield.

The Resident Evil 4 Remake sold four million copies in its first two weeks of release.

With the highly successful Resident Evil 4 Remake breathing new life into the Resident Evil franchise, the timing couldn't be more perfect for the upcoming CG-animated film, Resident Evil: Death Island, and the rumored live-action sequel to Welcome to Raccoon City.

We will keep you updated as further information about the Umbrella Chronicles becomes available.
