Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings past $500 million worldwide at the box office

Despite its lengthy runtime, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been a colossal success for Sony Pictures Animation.

Marvel Studios might have had a rocky start to the year, but the tides have turned with its latest blockbuster, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, soaring high at the box office. Of course, it can't exactly gloat when much of the royalties, revenue, and bragging rights, go to the real-life owners of Spider-Man, Sony.

Three weeks into its theatrical release, the sequel to 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has swung past the $500 million mark at the global box office.

With earnings of $290.4 million domestically and $215.9 million internationally, Across the Spider-Verse has now amassed an astounding $506.3 million worldwide, firmly securing its position as the sixth highest-grossing film of 2023.

The sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled to be released on March 29 next year.

The first installment in the Spider-Verse trilogy was a massive box office triumph for Sony, making $384.3 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. However, its successor has surpassed all expectations by miles (no pun intended), achieving a stunning fivefold return on Sony's $100 million investment.

The Flash was all set to be the blockbuster of June before Across the Spider-Verse swooped in to steal the spotlight from the DCU. In just its opening weekend, the film grossed $120.5 million at the domestic box office, outperforming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which managed to net $114 million.

This made it the second-highest domestic opening of the year, falling just behind the unstoppable success of Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

A female-focused spin-off film, Spider-Woman, is currently in development.

Although it's highly unlikely Across the Spider-Verse will achieve the same monumental success as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there's no denying that it still has some serious staying power, especially considering it has only been three weeks since its release.

Given all the momentum heading into the premiere of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which may or may not feature multiple versions of Spider-Gwen, the threequel might end up joining elite company by making a billion when it premieres on March 29, 2024.
