Netflix braves controversial storm with The Witcher Season 5 renewal

The fifth season of The Witcher will bring back Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia even though fans still don't know how well he'll do.

Either Netflix signed Liam Hemsworth to an economically-sound multi-season deal or The Hunger Games actor impressed the showrunners so much with his performance as the new Geralt of Rivia that they've decided to sign him for Season 5 even though he still hasn't made his debut in the role yet.

We still haven't had a chance to see Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.

According to an interview by Deadline with Sophie Holland, the show's casting director, the filming for the fourth season of The Witcher is kicking off soon.

Holland shared that "there will be a short gap" between the filming of Season 4 before the production team goes "straight into season five."

Fans still haven't fully recovered from the news that Henry Cavill is no longer playing Geralt of Rivia after his appearance in Season 3, which premieres next month. Cavill, a vocal enthusiast of all things geeky and nerdy, including the OG Witcher books, confirmed his departure from the series last year. Although no concrete reason was provided, Cavill had previously expressed his desire to see a proper adaptation of the original works by Andrzej Sapkowski. This led many to assume that Cavill's expectations for the role clashed with the vision that the showrunner, Lauren Hissrich, had for The Witcher.

The backlash, among others, led to the negative reception of The Witcher: Blood Origin last Christmas, making some fans fear for the potential future of the Netflix series.

Signing Liam Hemsworth to two seasons as Geralt of Rivia is a sign of confidence.

Nevertheless, Holland appears to be eager to see what Hemsworth brings to the grey-haired monster slayer, saying "I really look forward to seeing what Liam brings", adding that the team is "excited about Liam coming in" and that the actor "has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement for it."

As The Witcher ventures into its third season, which airs on June 29 with a split two-volume release, viewers will be in for a series of earth-shaking revelations and dangerous threats. Most notable of all is the Wild Hunt's pursuit of Geralt and Ciri, which will dominate the overarching narrative. This, coupled with the identity of Ciri's father (the White Flame) promises a rollercoaster ride of a season.

If nothing else, fans can consider this as a swan song for Cavill as he bids one of his most iconic roles farewell.

We're just hoping that Liam Hemsworth puts in as much effort as Henry Cavill did in the first three seasons of The Witcher.

Speaking of The Witcher, the company behind its famous video game adaptations, CD Projekt RED, recently denied that it's discussing a potential purchase by Sony.
