Square Enix blasts "lackluster" Forspoken sales

Square Enix's latest statement comes after observers spotted copies of Forspoken being thrown in landfills.

At some point, Square Enix has to realize that it's not just the games themselves that have problems. Sometimes, it's how they're made, marketed, and sold. But, for now, Square is up to its usual antics as it effectively throws Forspoken under the bus.

Forspoken's biggest strength was supposed to be its graphics and it didn't exactly impress much in that department as well.

Forspoken had a rough demo period, which set the tone for an even worse launch. But, fans were hoping Forspoken did a lot better commercially. Apparently, this wasn't the case.

Square Enix's president and representative director, Yosuke Matsuda, praised Forspoken in the company's February financial results briefing, saying that it "received positive feedback on its action features" and the company will use this to improve the "development capabilities of other games in the future."

Unfortunately, Matsuda revealed the reviews Forspoken were "challenging" and the sales were "lackluster." It was described as a "considerable downside risk to our FY2023/3 earnings."

This statement explains why Square Enix is reabsorbing Luminous Productions back into the company in May.

In the meantime, Luminous is working on the DLC, In Tanta We Trust, which is "on track for release this summer."

It probably didn't help that Forspoken came out around the same time as Hogwarts Legacy, which handled magical spells a lot better.

Square Enix and "disappointing" sales of its games have become a recurring theme lately. Marvel's Avengers, Outriders, and Guardians of the Galaxy all failed to live up to the company's expectations.

However, unlike the aforementioned games, Forspoken's poor sales numbers are expected. Forspoken didn't review very well and fans spotted multiple copies of the steelbooks in the trash following its launch.

If it's any consolation, Square Enix is looking at a sure-fire hit with Final Fantasy coming out on June 22. A playable demo is scheduled to roll out weeks before its release.
