Warner Bros. Pictures has released the trailer for the upcoming Barbie film, giving us a first look at Margot Robbie's depiction of the eponymous fashion doll produced by Mattel.
The teaser, whose runtime is a little over a minute, opens with a scene that seems to have come right out of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, with Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra playing in the background, but instead of a tribe of hominins, we get a group of small girls playing with their dolls, and instead of an alien monolith appearing in their midst, a colossal Barbie appears. The trailer then proceeds to give us a little peak into the Barbie live-action world, which is filled with hues of pink and blue.
Directed by Greta Gerwig in collaboration with her partner Noah Baumbach, who wrote the screenplay, the film features an ensemble cast that includes:

Back in 2014, Mattel teamed up with Sony Pictures to produce the film, with names such as Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway being attached to the project. Scheduling and creative conflicts with Amy later led to Sony opting for Anne Hathaway for the titular role. But, when Sony's option on the project expired in 2018, the film moved into Warner Bros. Pictures' direction, with Margot Robbie being signed on shortly afterward.
Although fans expected the 1997 Aqua band hit song Barbie Girl to feature in the film, the band's manager reported that the song will not be used in the film. Barbie is set to be released on July 21, 2023.
Speaking of Margot Robbie, fans are worried that her future in the DC Universe as Harley Quinn is in jeopardy following James Gunn's recent string of cancelations. Robbie previously said that she'd like to take a temporary break from playing the psychiatrist-turned-criminal but it appears this might be permanent. Robbie's Pirates of the Caribbean film has also reportedly been canceled despite earlier assurances from Jerry Bruckheimer that it's still in development.
