After the release date for The Marvels had been postponed multiple times, it seems the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5 film is locked for its 2023 debut. Originally set for release July 2022, The Marvels brings together Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau from WandaVision, and Iman Vellani’s spunky Ms. Marvel.

But beyond that, details of what the plot of the film was a closely guarded secret only hinted at the end of the first season of Ms. Marvel on Disney Plus.

The teaser trailer was released on the Marvel website and shared on the official social media channels such as Twitter and YouTube:

Scenes in the trailer sets up the key plot element of cosmic entanglement, which is what inadvertently brings the trio of heroines together. As Monica Rambeau (now working with Nick Fury under S.A.B.E.R.) is investigating the jump point perimeter near the Earth’s upper atmosphere, contact with the wormhole triggers the entanglement that warps herself, Danvers, Khan into each other’s’ places. This leads to hilarious situations where they each must now deal with what the other person was involved in at the time the entanglement was triggered.

This idea of replacing one person with another person in a different place and time seems to be a nod to the comic book roots. At one point in the original Captain Marvel stories which starred Mar-Vell, he was trapped in the Negative Zone until Rick Jones swapped places with him (usually via the Nega-bands) when the hero was needed.

It looks like Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will be getting a new costume that gives a nod to the original suit of the Kree superhero Mar-Vell from the comic books.

Another interesting plot development in this teaser is the mention of S.A.B.E.R. In the Marvel Comics, the agency that deals with interstellar threats is S.W.O.R.D., which is an offshoot of S.H.I.E.L.D. In the MCU, S.W.O.R.D. was first mentioned in a deleted scene from Thor: The Dark World (2013). S.W.O.R.D. would later be fully introduced in WandaVision (2021). But it appears the MCU is expanding or replacing S.W.O.R.D. with S.A.B.E.R., which appears to be specifically created for The Marvels film.

We also see the return of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury to the big screen. The rest of the teaser shows glimpses of the situations the three super-heroes will be pitted against, including the return of the Kree Empire, Kamala Khan’s family, and more of Goose and his race of cat-like Flerken.

The Marvels teaser also came with an updated synopsis at the official website:

In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels."

The Marvels stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton, and Park Seo-joon. Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels hyper-jumps into theaters on November 10, 2023.
