Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 breaks $800 million barrier

James Gunn's MCU swansong is close to the box office total of the second film.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has some sturdy legs. Despite debuting over a month ago, James Gunn’s final MCU film is still putting up good numbers at the box office, and isn't looking to slow down anytime soon.

The final outing for the Guardians of the Galaxy is still putting up impressive numbers.

This summer is loaded with blockbuster movies with the Guardians of the Galaxy series finale headlining the parade for the month of May. Fast X and The Little Mermaid were the other tentpole films released in the month.

June is an even bigger month with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts already in theaters with Elemental, The Flash, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny coming out later this month.

Even with all the movies coming out, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 continued to attract audiences to theaters. The movie continues to have a strong showing at the box office, crossing a major global milestone by breaking the $800 million barrier. As of yesterday, the film totaled $805 million worldwide.

The final installment in the trilogy has now surpassed the lifetime gross of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1. The 2014 film made $770 million at the worldwide box office and introduced fans to the merry band of space misfits known collectively as The Guardians of the Galaxy.

The third film is just $60 million away from breaking the series record for box office earnings.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is still ahead but not by much. The 2017 film grossed $869 million during its worldwide theatrical run. If the trend of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 continues, it may overtake the second film but the race will be very close.

The third film had a huge opening weekend, earning $282 million. The movie surpassed expectations as industry experts estimated the movie to rake in $264 million. The excellent performance continued for the Chris Pratt-led film as it surpassed the total gross of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quatumania in just its second week.

In the US, the film delivered the best second-weekend hold in MCU history by earning an impressive $60 million. The film also broke the trend of second-weekend drops of over 50% for MCU movies with just a 49% drop compared to Ant-Man 3’s 70%. It also broke the series record for the biggest IMAX opening weekend and third-best IMAX debut for an MCU film, earning $25 million.

The final outing of the original team will likely end its theatrical run at the end of the month. Most Marvel movies have a 90-day theatrical run before moving to the Disney+ streaming platform. So, expect the film to be available on demand by the start of July.

We may see the Guardians of the Galaxy again in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

Will the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 end up as the best film in the trilogy? Our guess is that it will given how it is currently performing and with two more weeks in theaters. The third film is by far the best in the trilogy and deserves to be on top.

So, what’s next for the Guardians of the Galaxy now that James Gunn has moved to DC? Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista are set to hang up their space suits while Chris Pratt is still unsure of his future in the MCU.

We will hopefully see some of the team members return for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. There have been rumors that Marvel wants to have every available superhero participate in the upcoming Avengers movies.
