James Gunn confirms Blue Beetle as the first DCU character

Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes will be the first superhero for the rebooted DC Universe when it hits theaters later this year.

The Flash effectively ended the DC Extended Universe with the release of his first solo superhero film. With the end of the DCEU, the new look DC Universe gets a new a fresh start with one of the unlikeliest characters.

Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña will be the first actor cast as a DCU superhero.

Blue Beetle, not a popular character like Superman or Batman, will debut as the first superhero in the rebooted cinematic universe for DC Studios. James Gunn, co-CEO of the new studio, also clarified which movie will kick off Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

In a recent interview with the Inside of You podcast, Gunn revealed that Jamie Reyes aka Blue Beetle will be the DCU's first superhero. He adds that Superman: Legacy will be the official start of the new DC Universe.

"I mean the first DCU character, for sure, is Blue Beetle, and the first full DCU movie is Superman: [Legacy]," Gunn said during the podcast.

Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed as co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios late last year. Since then, the duo has charted a course towards reimagining the franchise and focusing on telling "the greatest story ever told." Early this year, the pair revealed the new-look DC Universe and the first slate of projects for Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

However, the duo also inherited four projects from the past regime that were yet to be released: Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The Shazam sequel and Ezra Miller’s first solo outing as The Flash are both set in the old DC Extended Universe. Both Blue Beetle and the second Aquaman movie are both part of the new DC Universe thanks to The Flash effectively introducing time travel to the DC Universe.

Blue Beatle is not part of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

Despite not being part of the new slate of movies for the ten-year plan of the DC Universe, Blue Beetle and Aquaman are the first films in the new shared universe. Superman: Legacy will be the first full-fledged movie set in the new universe under the watch of Gunn and Safran.

DC Studios has kept fans in the dark with Superman: Legacy. The upcoming Superman reboot is being written and will be directed by James Gunn. The movie follows Clark Kent as he starts his career as The Man of Steel. There have been casting rumors for Superman: Legacy but nothing concrete has been announced so far.

Blue Beetle is arriving in theaters on August 18.
