Chris Hemsworth confirms Extraction 3 at TUDUM

Netflix greenlights the third installment just as Extraction 2 was released on the streaming platform.

The Extraction universe is getting a lot bigger. Franchise star Chris Hemsworth will be returning as Tyler Rake in a third movie. Hemsworth and series director Sam Hargrave were on stage last Saturday at the live event held in Brazil to announce a third installment.

Chris Hemsworth and Sam Hargrave were at TUDUM for the announcement.

The sequel announcement was made just two days after the premiere of Extraction 2. The second film’s ending suggests that more entries in the series are coming. Idris Elda’s unnamed character advises Tyler Rake that he can lessen his prison sentence by taking on more extraction missions.

The Extraction series seems to be heading down a similar path as Keanu Reeves’ John Wick. Both film franchises are structured similarly as scalable stunt-heavy movies led by one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.

Extraction 3 has been greenlit by Netflix.

Extraction series screenwriter Joe Russo addressed the possibility of having more films in the popular series earlier this year, much to the delight of fans - despite seemingly being just a casual action romp, viewers have become interested in the IP's universe.

"I mean, you never want to anticipate the audience’s response, but there’s certainly room for an Extraction 3," Russo said. "There are some surprises in Extraction 2 that could open up the world of Extraction, on top of which, I think Sam Hargrave did an incredible job with this film, and I think that he has topped the first one."

The first Extraction was a surprise hit on Netflix. The film was released in April 2020 and racked up 99 million views just in its first month. At that time, it was the most-watched movie on the platform. It ended up as the fourth most-watched film on Netflix for 2020.

Director Sam Hargrave went all out with Extraction 2 in hopes of replicating the success of the first film. The second movie features a 21-minute one-shot that is truly eye-catching. Both Hargrave and Hemsworth talked extensively about the oner in Extraction 2.

The rehearsal for the 21-minute one-shot took 29 days.

"The rehearsal process [for the oner] was four or five months from conception to finding the locations," Hargrave revealed, "mapping out the path, and then getting the actors doing all their moves. Then shooting, it took 29 days, I believe, to complete."

The lengthy action sequence starts with Hemsworth straight up catching fire, a stunt that the star decided to pull off himself. When you hear that one of the year's most thrilling scenes starts with the lead character in flames and only gets better, you know you are in for a ride.

"Seven or eight takes I think we had," Hemsworth shared. "It was fun. As soon as my arm lit up, it was 'action'! Because it would burn for probably 15 seconds or something, and by the end of that little sequence of punches and kicks and so on, if the fire wasn't out, my instructions was to pat it out myself. It felt cool. It felt fun."

It will be interesting to see what Hemsworth, Hargrave, and the Russo brother come up with in the third movie. It's hard to top the action sequence of the second movie but the cast and crew of Extraction will undoubtedly try their hardest to beat it in the third installment.

Extraction and Extraction 2 are available for streaming on Netflix.

  1. I feel like he is trying to do a John Cena and escape with this role but he will always be known for playing Thor. The first movie was good, the second one was okay. I didn't need a 3rd one personally.
