Nintendo reveals a Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon remake

The upcoming remake is coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Fans far and wide always eagerly await each Nintendo Direct stream. The latest one was loaded with Super Mario games announcements. One of the titles revealed - and one of the most surprising - during the livestream was a remake of Luigi’s Mansion 2.

The remake will feature enhanced visuals and gameplay.

Nintendo announced that it is remaking Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for the Switch at Nintendo Direct. The original game was released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS and was a commercial success, shipping over 6.4 million units.

"Can Luigi summon the courage to save Evershade Valley? Explore haunted mansions full of spooky specters and bone-chilling challenges next year," Nintendo revealed during the announcement, though the game's premise shouldn't come as a surprise.

The remake will feature updated graphics and gameplay to be fully compatible with the current Nintendo handheld, as the Switch lacks the dual screens and the stylus found on the 3DS. The announcement for Luigi’s Mansion was very brief and only had a 19-second trailer. Nintendo promised to reveal more details about the upcoming title in the future.

Dark Moon is a sequel to 2006’s Luigi’s Mansion for the Nintendo Gamecube. The game won several accolades and is one of the best-selling titles on the 3DS handheld. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is an action-adventure game where players take control of Luigi as he embarks on a mission to explore a haunted mansion yet again and capture hostile ghosts.

There are five distinct mansions in the 3DS version of the game with exploration being divided into mission-based levels. Luigi must complete several objectives like locating objects, accessing a locked room, or defeating boss ghosts. Players have to avoid hazards and ghost attacks. If Luigi takes too much damage, he will faint and players have to restart the mission.

Luigi will be tasked with exploring a haunted mansion and capturing ghosts.

Many of the missions in Luigi’s Mansion center around the ghost-hunting mechanics. Players have to stun ghosts with a flashlight called the Strobulb. When a ghost is stunned, Luigi can then lower its health by using a vacuum until it is weak enough to be captured.

The recent Nintendo Direct had multiple Mario game announcements. Super Mario Bros Wonder is a new 2D side-scroller coming to the Switch in October and is the first Mario platforming game in more than a decade.

WarioWare: Move It is a new motion control game coming this year. There is also a new Princess Peach 2.5D side scroller coming to the Switch next year, marking the iconic character's first leading role in a Switch title.

Nintendo has not announced a firm release date for Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. We will be keeping you updated on all the titles announced at the Nintendo Direct.

  1. Maybe it is a bit controversial but in recent years, I have enjoyed Luigi games more than Mario ones.
