The Resident Evil 4 Remake fell short of setting a new launch record for the franchise, but landing in second place isn't a bad spot to be for a risky remake of one of the best games in the series.
According to Capcom, Resident Evil 4 sold at least 3 million units in its first two days of release. In comparison, the current record holder is Resident Evil 6, which sold 4.5 million copies in a similar span.
More importantly, Resident Evil 4 is now the best-selling Resident Evil remake, outpacing Resident Evil 2 (3 million in 1 week) and Resident Evil 3 (4 million in 18 months).
It remains to be seen if the Resident Evil 4 Remake can ship 5 million units faster than Resident Evil Village, a figure it took a little over five months to reach.
Surprisingly enough, the best-selling Resident Evil game is 2009's Resident Evil 5, which is most famous for that particular scene where Chris Redfield punched a boulder out of his way.
The Resident Evil 4 Remake is a modern reimagining of the 2005 title that originally came out on the GameCube before it was ported over to other platforms, including the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Wii.
Contrary to popular belief, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim isn't the most-ported game in recent history. Instead, the honor belongs to Resident Evil 4, which is available to play on as many as 13 different platforms, including the Oculus Quest 2. It remains to be seen if Capcom has similar plans for the Resident Evil 4 Remake although a free VR mode is coming to the PSVR2.
We highly doubt if the Resident Evil 4 Remake can outsell the original with 12.3 million units sold.
Regardless of what kind of sales numbers the RE4 Remake puts up down the line, the launch figures are a good sign for Capcom.
It is unclear which game Capcom will remake next but the long-time Resident Evil publisher previously mentioned a third game, that's part of the trilogy starting with Resident Evil Biohazard is coming.
Judging by Capcom's current cycle, it will release the ninth mainline Resident Evil game first before going back to remake, probably, Resident Evil 5. However, series fans are hoping Capcom will revisit the more underrated "spin-offs" like Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Resident Evil Zero or maybe even Resident Evil.
