Resident Evil 4 Mercenaries DLC arrives as promised

The fan-favorite mode from the original Resident Evil 4 is back but Capcom can't help but spoil its launch by including microtransactions.

Capcom's modernized take on the iconic and influential Resident Evil 4 can do no wrong. Following the critically acclaimed release that saw it outsell nearly every other Resident Evil game at launch, Capcom is giving audiences even more reasons to check it out by releasing The Mercenaries game mode.

As expected, Hunk is a bit overpowered in The Mercenaries Mode.

The highly anticipated free update for the Resident Evil 4 Remake brings back the fan-favorite score-focused mode from the original game.

As of the moment, these are the characters that are available in the Resident Evil 4 Remake Mercenaries Mode and how to unlock them:

  • Leon Kennedy - First character unlocked by default
  • Luis Sera - Unlocked by beating any stage with at least 100,000 points to get an A-rank
  • Jack Krauser - Unlocked by beating any stage with an A-rank with Luis
  • Hunk - Unlocked by beating any stage with an A-rank using Krauser

Each playable character in The Mercenaries mode will have individual weapons, item loadouts, and Mayhem mode. This is a new ability that grants each character a specific boost to their abilities while also granting extra points for every enemy hit or killed.

Unfortunately, Capcom couldn't resist the temptation of adding more microtransactions into the game. But, don't worry, it's not like they're game-breaking. For example, if you can't be bothered to complete the fetch quests and assassinations from The Merchant, you can hand Capcom $2.99 to get the exclusive upgrade for a particular weapon.

This is on par with what Capcom has done in recent Resident Evil titles, like the 99c Survival Resources Pack for Resident Evil Village.

It's either Capcom scrapped their initial plans to add Albert Wesker into the RE4 Remake as a playable character for The Mercenaries Mode or he's coming at a later point in time as a paid DLC.

Curiously enough, The Mercenaries Mode doesn't have Ada Wong and Albert Wesker. It's safe to say that Capcom might offer these characters as paid downloadable content in the future.

Hopefully, this isn't the case, especially after Capcom just confirmed that the Resident Evil 4 Remake has already sold more than 4 million copies.

The only other confirmed post-launch content for the RE4 Remake at the moment is a VR mode for the PSVR 2.
